Understanding Dermal Fillers: What They Are, Where They Can Be Used, and What They Can Improve!

In recent years, cosmetic procedures have seen a remarkable increase in popularity. In 2023, the global market value of dermal fillers was estimated to be $5.5 billion. That's a lot of people having dermal fillers!

Growth Projection: The dermal filler industry is projected to grow at more than 10% from 2023 to 2032, reaching a market value of $14.5 billion. New Forest Health and Aesthetics is part of this growth. We have seen a big increase in our dermal filler services.

If you’re considering enhancing your facial features, restoring volume lost due to aging, or flattening out lines, understanding what dermal fillers are and their applications can help you make an informed decision. You can also book a free face-to-face consultation with me, Gill.

If you're feeling a little flat or hollow and are unsure about the treatments possible with dermal fillers, here's some good news: there are many areas that can be treated. As an advanced practitioner, I can provide all these treatments at my clinic in Ringwood, Hampshire.

Lets get into it, what Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances designed to fill in wrinkles, add volume, and create a smoother appearance on the face.

Are they painful? I use numbing cream to reduce the pain. So, you're in good hands—my hands!

They are composed of various materials, the most common being hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that retains moisture, providing hydration and plumpness to the skin. Hyaluronic acid acts as a building block, much like Lego, to enhance the youthfulness of your skin—a liquid gel time machine!

Other types of fillers may contain calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, or polymethyl methacrylate. Each type has distinct properties, making them suitable for different applications and results. These different fillers mainly depend on price. If there is a certain filler you know works for you, we can work with you. For our dermal fillers, we mainly use the brand Restylane®.

"Restylane® is designed to help soften laugh lines and can help you restore a more natural look to your face while maintaining your facial expressions. Refyne is a next-generation hyaluronic acid dermal filler designed to help support your natural expression—for real-life results that help maintain natural movement when you’re smiling, frowning, and even puckering up." Source: Restylane USA

Sounds amazing, right? We use this type of dermal filler because I am an advocate of Natural Looking Aesthetics. If you want a more unnatural look, then we won't be able to help you. However, feel free to come for a chat; maybe we will change your mind and keep you safe.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

When injected into specific areas of the face, dermal fillers work by adding volume beneath the skin. This process helps to:

  • Smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Restore lost volume in areas such as cheeks and temples.

  • Enhance facial contours and shape.

  • Hydrate and improve skin texture.

The results can provide a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance, often lasting from several months to over a year, depending on the type of filler used and individual factors.

We also recommend reducing alcohol intake, increasing sleep quality, walking more, and drinking plenty of water. This will help your dermal filler treatment last longer, providing better value not just for your money and more energy to show everyone your upgraded look!  but also for your health and well-being. Life hacks! We are New Forest Health and Aesthetics; remember, we really do care about your health. It's why this spring I will be providing weight management and nutritional support services; more on that in 2025!

Where Can You Have Dermal Fillers?

Plenty of places! Here is the list I offer:

  • Cheeks: Injections are placed into the upper cheek area or the midface. They restore lost volume, enhance cheek contours, and create a naturally youthful appearance. This area can be injected to achieve a higher cheekbone effect, which can improve overall facial symmetry and prominence.

  • Lips: Fillers are injected into the lips, including the vermilion borders (the outline of the lips) and the body of the lips. It enhances lip fullness, definition, and symmetry. Fillers can also reduce the appearance of fine lines around the lips (commonly known as smoker's lines, an odd name, as people who don't smoke also get these, so let's just call them lines) and create a more defined cupid's bow.

  • Nasolabial Folds: Injections are placed along the lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth. It smooths and fills the nasolabial folds, reducing their depth and creating a more youthful, refreshed look.

  • Marionette Lines: Fillers are placed at the corners of the mouth and downward, along the jawline. It fills the lines extending from the corners of the mouth downward, helping to alleviate the sad or tired appearance associated with marionette lines.

  • Under Eyes (Tear Troughs): Careful injections are made into the area directly under the eyes. It restores volume to hollow areas, reducing the appearance of dark circles and bags under the eyes, and leading to a more rested appearance.

  • Chin and Jawline: Fillers are injected along the chin and jawline. This enhances the definition in the chin (for a more prominent or balanced appearance) and contouring along the jawline to create a more youthful, chiselled look. This can also help improve the overall contour of the face and provide structure.

  • Forehead: Fillers can be injected into horizontal lines on the forehead or to restore volume in the temples. Fills in deep lines and creates a smoother forehead appearance. Injecting fillers in the temples can also create balance in the face and prevent a hollow look as one ages.

  • Temples: Fillers are placed in the hollow areas above the cheekbones. It restores volume in the temple area, which can appear sunken as people age. Adding volume here can enhance facial contours and helps achieve a more youthful overall look.

  • Hollow Areas: Fillers target all hollow areas in the skin. It can raise and smooth out uneven skin texture, contributing to a more uniform facial appearance.

So why have Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers offer an excellent non-surgical option for those looking to enhance their facial appearance or combat the signs of aging. With a variety of applications and benefits, they provide a means to restore youthfulness and improve facial contours, allowing individuals to feel more confident and satisfied with their appearance.

Before considering dermal fillers, it is always advised to book a free consultation where I can assess your needs and guide you through the process, ensuring safe and satisfactory results. Whether you desire fuller lips, lifted cheeks, or a more defined jawline, dermal fillers can be tailored to meet your aesthetic goals and help you achieve the look you desire.

Dermal filler is best applied over a period, enabling a natural progression of change in your face. Remember, we want a natural look. Therefore, we offer dermal filler packages that can be used over multiple visits.
